Body Map The body map is a tool used in the Assessment module of the Desk Doctor program. It allows you accurately to pinpoint where you are experiencing any symptoms. By moving the mouse over the model you can highlight specific parts of the body. If you experience symptoms in an area you highlight, click on it and answer the list of questions that appear. The information you provide is used to build a personal plan of exercises and stretches that is the most effective in your case to prevent and rehabilitate repetitive strain injuries. Brachial Plexus A network of nerves that transmits signals from the spinal cord to the arm and from the arm to the spinal cord, controlling movement and carrying sensory signals. The brachial plexus is often involved in thoracic outlet syndrome.
Bursitis An inflammation of a bursa or fluid sac which is located close to a joint. The bursa contains synovial fluid which makes joint movement smooth and painless. When it becomes inflamed due to irritation, infection or injury, it causes tenderness, pain and restricted motion. What to do about bursitis.
Burning pain A pain that feels hot, regardless of whether or not the area is physically hot. The sensations of pain and temperature travel along very small nerve fibers called C-fibers. These nerve fibers do not have an insulating myelin sheath. When pain or heat (burning) are felt without a stimulus it may be due to a type of neurologic over sensitivity. Both pain and heat sensitivity are de-regulated by nerves which sense motion (in muscles and joints). In other words, when there is little or no motion in an area of the body, the sensitivity to pain and heat can increase even to the point where these sensations are felt without an environmental cause.
Burning sensation The experience of heat or burning without a hot stimulus. This can be due to changes in the sensitivity of the nerves that sense heat. Heat and pain sensations travel along small nerve fibers called C fibers. Their sensitivity is regulated by several mechanisms in the spinal cord and brain. See: Pain (reducing, inhibiting, blocking) below.
