Inflammation A normal response to injury or irritation of tissue characterized by swelling, pain, redness, and heat. This is a normal physiologic process which may be likened to a construction zone fence. It is designed to keep all the building materials inside the zone. The practice of putting ice or cold packs on inflamed areas is under recent criticism as it will reduce the inflammation and allow the building materials to escape from the construction zone and thus impair proper healing. While severe injuries may require some icing and reduction of extreme swelling, general cases of minor inflammation are often found to heal more effectively without the use of ice. As always, speak to your doctor regarding your specific case.
Invasive A procedure that penetrates the body or pierces the skin.
Irritation An inflammatory or painful reaction to an injury. Symptoms may include pain, numbness, tingling and weakness.
